• Stefanie Jason

Stefanie Jason is a doctoral candidate in Art History at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Her research broadly focuses on modern and contemporary African art and photography, with a special interest in archival recuperation and experimental methods in black women’s art. Stefanie’s dissertation centers the immersive environments of contemporary Southern African artists; paying attention to how these sites offer unique theories on spatio-temporality, black womanhood, and the more-than-human in the aftermath of colonialism and apartheid.

Stefanie is a Rutgers Presidential Fellow (2020-2025) and was a 2022 ArtTable Fellow working with Amant Foundation on the forthcoming exhibition Jayne Cortez: A Poet’s Guide to the World. Prior to her doctoral studies, Stefanie completed her MA at Wits University, Johannesburg, with a thesis on the archival absence of pioneering photojournalist Mabel Cetu. Her writing has appeared in Aperture, Africa South Art Initiative and The Brooklyn Rail.
