Alexandra Coutavas is a Ph.D. candidate specializing in late medieval and early Renaissance art of Northern Europe. Her dissertation examines Netherlandish cloth painting in oil, and questions of their technical production, materiality, aesthetic status, and function in civic and religious visual culture. Alexandra completed her M.A. with high distinction at The Courtauld Institute of Art. Her master’s thesis considered a painting by Hans Memling within the socio-cultural context of Bruges. She graduated from the University of Virginia with bachelor’s degrees in Art History and Biology, as part of the Art History department’s Distinguished Majors Program. Prior to pursuing a doctorate, Alexandra worked as the Zukerman Departmental Assistant in the Department of Drawings & Prints at The Morgan Library & Museum, and as Administrative & Executive Assistant at The Armory Show in New York City. She is currently the Editorial Assistant to ‘Gesta,’ the journal of the International Center of Medieval Art.
