Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS)
Program Overview
The Art History department offers three tracks for our Masters degree program. In addition, we also offer a 4+1 B.A./M.A. program in Curatorial Studies, which enables undergraduates to complete both degrees within five years.
With the exception of the B.A./M.A. program, the deadline for all applications for the M.A. program is January 10. The deadline for the B.A./M.A. program is below.
Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS)

Curatorial Studies Track
The Curatorial Studies track offers a curriculum designed for students who wish to be involved with visual arts as a profession beyond academia and is applicable to a number of careers in the visual arts, including at museums, galleries, non-profits, and the private sector. Curatorial Studies differs from Art History in that it emphasizes hands-on training, ethical concerns, the history and practice of collecting and display, audience engagement, and the real-world issues that impact art institutions. Art History Track
The Art History track affords students the opportunity to pursue higher training that can prepare them for applying to Ph.D. programs in the future. It can serve as a bridge program for students who show exceptional promise but do not have the requisite background or research experience to apply directly to a Ph.D. program. The program at Rutgers is targeted especially towards students who have a compelling reason to study with specific faculty members in the department, and potential applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members in the department to ensure that the program would serve their needs and interests. In addition, students may pursue a joint interdisciplinary program in art history and classical archaeology (by special arrangement), at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels (requiring language proficiency in French, German, Greek and Latin). Addition special interdisciplinary programs may be arranged in areas such as African-American studies, African studies, film studies, gender studies, Medieval studies, Renaissance studies, Russian and Slavic studies, Asian studies, and critical studies involving faculty in the appropriate graduate programs or undergraduate departments. Short of entering a full interdisciplinary program, students may take a limited number of courses in other disciplines as indicated in the Graduate School Catalog.
