Mieke Paulsen specializes in the art of Late Antiquity. Her research interests extend from the ancient Mediterranean to medieval Europe, focusing primarily on the survival of indigenous traditions in the face of cultural or political conquest. Currently, she is continuing her work on the concept and function of frames and borders in ancient art, the supernatural Roman wilderness, and the relationship between the Roman empires and the "barbarian" peoples of Northern Europe.
