In Russian and Soviet art, Dvizhenie—or the “Movement Art” Group (1964-1972)—were unique, neither fully espousing the government line nor openly challenging it. Embracing “cybernetics,” which transformed ideas of control and dynamic change after WWII, Dvizhenie married art and science in kinetic sculptures and participatory installations. Art historian Jane Sharp explores this fascinating and little-known movement, which aimed to reflect the rapid pace of change and intensive daily rhythm of the runaway 1960s.
