Art After Hours: First Tuesdays

This month, Art After Hours offers poetry, curator-led exhibition tours and live music. The program is free and open to the public, and includes complimentary refreshments.
Exhibition Tours / 5:45-6:15 and 6:30-7:00pm
Julia Tulovsky, Curator of Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art, leads tours of Commemorating the Russian Revolution, 1917/2017, draws attention to the centennial of this major event from a unique perspective, considering the political, social, and cultural aftermath of the revolution as it was reflected in art created from the 1950s to the 1980s. An initial embrace of creative freedom by the newly-established communist government gave way to a tightly-controlled program of propaganda, with a range of consequences for those who dared to challenge it. The exhibition pays tribute to the initial goal of the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection to preserve the art created under government restriction and danger of persecution.

Poetry Reading / 7:00pm
In conjunction with Commemorating the Russian Revolution, 1917/2017, we welcome Ainsley Morse, Ben Felker-Quinn, Charles Swank, and Matvei Yankelevich, for a reading of Russian poets whose work was suppressed by the Soviet government, including works by Osip Mandelstam and Daniil Kharms, who were both arrested under Stalin, and poetry written during the Siege of Leningrad in 1942. The reading is organized by Matvei Yankelevich, cofounder and co-executive director of Ugly Duckling Presse, which “endeavors to create an experience of art free of expectation, coercion, and utility.”

We welcome back The Young Picassos, the Caribbean trio of Pete Bathelus, Carlos Noel, and Jevaun Grant, who got their start here at Rutgers-New Brunswick. The Young Picassos blend their cultural roots with such genres as gospel, top 40, and jazz, returning the beauty and energy of live music to current generations.
