  1. Greek: Geometric through Hellenistic

  2. Roman: Origin of Rome through Constantine

  3. Etruscan/Roman: Villanovan through the First century B.C.

ANCIENT/LATE ANTIQUE

  1. The Roman World, First century B.C. through the 9th century A.D.

MEDIEVAL

  1. Early Medieval, 300 to 1100

  2. Romanesque and Gothic, 1000 to 1500

  3. Early Christian and Byzantine, 300 to 1500

RENAISSANCE

  1. Italy, 1300 to 1600

  2. Northern Europe, 1300 to 1600

  3. A 150-year span in Italy and Northern Europe between 1300 and 1600

  4. Italy, 1250 to 1550

BAROQUE

  1. A 300-year span in a country or region: Spain and Portugal; Italy; France; the Low Countries; England; or Germany, usually 1500 to 1800 or 1600 to 1900

  2. A 100-year span throughout Europe, usually 1600 to 1700. For Italy, the dates are 1585 to 1700. (If Rococo is included, the dates are 1600 to 1775)

MODERN

  1. Art and Architecture, 1780 to 1950

  2. Art and Architecture, 1850 to the present

  3. American Art and Architecture, 1650 to 1950

  4. Art and Architecture, 1780 to 1950, Focus on architecture (50% of exam will cover architectural topics)

ASIAN

  1. Chinese Buddhist Art from its inception, 1st century CE to the Song Dynasty 1279 and late Imperial from the Yuan to Qing 1279-1911
  2. Chinese Sculpture from the Neolithic to the 13th century

Students pursuing a Ph.D. in Asian or African art should consult their advisers and the graduate program director for guidance regarding examination fields.
