Course Description:

Principal artists of the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy, Spain, France, and/or England in monographic format

Fall, 2021:  Two major Italian Baroque painters will be our focus for the semester: Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. The class explores their careers independently but also examines critical themes that affect study of both, such as the impact of life on art, picturing violence, innovative artistic practice, self-representation, contemporary and posthumous reputation, and artistic legacy.
