PhD Qualifying Exam & Dissertation
Written and oral qualifying examinations in the student's major field of concentration must be taken within one year of completion of course work. Following the successful completion of the examination, the dissertation topic is approved, and the dissertation committee is formed. A student working on the dissertation must register for Dissertation Research Credits. The number of research credits taken each semester may range from one to twelve, for a minimum total of 24 credits. When the dissertation is completed, an oral defense is normally conducted by the dissertation committee.
