PhD Program

Students who choose to work towards the Ph.D. must declare their intention after having completed eight of the ten courses required for the M.A. At that time the student should select a field of specialization. An optional minor field consisting of 3 graduate courses within a specific field may also be declared. The faculty will then determine whether the student will be admitted to the doctoral program. Once accepted into the Ph.D. program, the student is excused from the M.A. examination but not from the Master's essay. Eight additional courses (totaling sixteen courses -- 48 credits) are required to complete course requirements for the Ph.D. Two foreign languages are required. One of the two languages must be German, and the other should be in the student's field of specialization.
