Dissertation Proposal Workshop Day

The student in consultation with the dissertation supervisor will prepare a proposal that explains the method, key concepts, and intended intellectual contribution of the dissertation. The student will present the proposal to the faculty and fellow students at an open event, Dissertation Proposal Workshop Day. Dissertation Proposal Workshop Day will be held approximately two weeks in advance of a faculty meeting. The presentation will be ten to twelve minutes long. The Workshop Day will allow professors and fellow students to ask questions and make suggestions for improving the proposal; the proposing student will have one week to incorporate changes. The revised dissertation proposal will be submitted to the faculty one week before the next faculty meeting. Faculty will then vote to approve or reject the revised proposal. The dissertation proposal will be approximately 3000 words, or ten double-spaced pages at 12 point font, not counting notes and bibliography.

By 4PM on the day of Dissertation Proposal Workshop, the student will submit the script of the spoken presentation to the graduate program administrative assistant. This script will serve as a draft document. It should be approximately 2100 words, or seven double-spaced pages at 12 point font, not counting notes and bibliography. The purpose of this script is to aid faculty members who cannot attend the Dissertation Proposal Workshop Day; it will not be used for voting.

Dissertation Proposal Workshop Day will be held in early September and early April.

In the event that the faculty does not approve a proposal, the student will revise and re-submit it at the following faculty meeting.
