Master's Examination

Necessary Exam Elements
Studying for the Exam
Recommended Reading List

Beginning in April 2007, the Master's Examination will consist of two parts: three comparisons and three essay questions. Three faculty members serve on a rotating basis on the M.A. examination committee. Each member grades the examination individually and then the three meet to discuss the exam and calculate the final grades. The faculty as a whole votes to confirm the findings of the MA examination committee.

Part I:
Slides for the comparisons are drawn from western art history.

For the comparisons, students must be prepared to identify the works shown. Correct identifications means that the six works of art (two in each comparison) are identified by artist (if known), title, style, and date. It is acceptable to use the bracket dates from Art History 105 for art works created before 1400. For art works created after 1400, students must date the work within 25 years.

Each comparison will be twenty minutes long.

Part II:
In the second part of the exam, students are required to answer three questions in three hours. Questions are divided into three chronological categories. Students are given a choice of questions, but must answer at least one question in each category. The essays must be thorough and logical, and each essay must answer the question asked.

In the case of students who have taken extensive course work in Asian or African art, faculty members in those areas will be consulted about the composition of the examination.
