November 2004 - Xander van Eck Lecture Faculty: Angela Howard is one of the contributors to the exhibition China, Dawn of a Golden Age, 200-750 AD which will open at the MET, NY, on October 12-January 23, 2005. It is hailed as one of the great archaeological shows based on the most recent findings in China, see New York Times review, Sunday October 3, 2004. dr. Howard has been part of the museum team involved in the show ever since the project started, seven yers ago. Her role has been that of choosing the Buddhist art in the show by traveling at least three times to China to visit the museums with the best evidence. In the catalogue Professor Howard wrote the essay titled "Buddhist Art in China" and the majority of the entries regarding the Buddhist sculpture. Dr. Howard will be a speaker in the Symposium, on November 13th, presenting the paper "The Acculturation of Buddhist Images in China: An Astonishing Pluralism of Styles." Current Students: Suzy Slominski: won the following awards: Research grant, The Lemmermann Foundation; Research grant, Elkins Foundation for the Study of Italian Art; and Summer research grant, Graduate School, New Brunswick Alumni: Jonathan Clancy, Art History BA, RC 2001, just won the CUNY Catherine Hoover Voorsanger Fellowship in American Art History with an Emphasis on Decorative Arts for 2003-04. Tracy Fitzpatrick (PhD 2004) has been appointed to a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Art History at SUNY Purchase. She will also serve as Adjunct Curator at the nearby Neuberger Museum. Christine Laidlaw (Ph.D. 1996, Art History) has won the Robert
C. Smith Award of the Decorative Arts Society for the most distinguished article
in the decorative arts published in 2003 in the United States by
citizen. Her article was entitled, "Painting with Silken Threads: Fanny
Dixwell Holmes and Japanism in Nineteenth-Century Boston," and it
appeared in the journal Studies in the Decorative Arts, Spring-Summer,
2003 (pp. 42-68). The Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the
Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture sponsors the journal and is
directed by Dr. Susan Weber Soros. The editor is Susan B. Sherill. The Smith
Award, named for art historian Robert C. Smith, is presented
annually. The award was made at a meeting of the Deocrative Arts
Society in New York on May 14. |
