Interior of Library in Kirkpatrick Chapel
The Chapel was built as a chapel/library. The builing served as the main library of Rutgers College from ca.1880 until approximately 1904 when Voorhees Hall was built. The reading room ran down the center of the building flanked, on either side, by the book stacks.

The old chapel consisted of just four bays. Almost half of the building was the library. After the construction of Voorhees Library, the partition wall was removed and the chapel was expanded.

The old Art Building stood next to Kirkpatrick Chapel on the Old Queens campus. The Shank Observatory can be seen in the distance to the right of the building; Ballantine Hall is visible on the left. The Art Building was demolished.

The Art Gallery in the old Art Building included plaster casts of classical statues for study and sketching. These casts and photographs were supplemented by a collection of 3"x4" lantern slides for the teaching of Art History. By the 1950s, increased use of 35mm slides was expanding the number of reproductions of art works available to students and faculty.
