Voorhees Hall: Developing the Mall
The Model and the Site - A Pictorial History

Model for Voorhees Hall.
The design for the new library for Rutgers College to replace the old one in Kirkpatrick Chapel preceded the choice of the site.

Plan showing three proposed sites (1,2,3) on Old Queens campus.
Before settling on a site across Hamilton Street, three sites on the old campus were considered for the new library.

Early view down Hamilton Street before the development on the opposite side of the street. New Jersey Hall and Ballantine Hall preceded Voorhees Library on the strip of land between the original Rutgers College campus and the Theological Seminary. Murray Hall (1909) and Milledolier Hall (1910, by Franklin & Ayers) followed soon after. Ford (1915) and Van Dyck (1928) were added soon after.

Aerial view of Rutgers College in 1923. Voorhees Hall is marked with a "V" at the corner of Hamilton St, and Bleecker Avenue. Murray Hall (ca.1910)(M) and Milledolier Hall (ca.1910 by Franklin & Ayers)(M2) are shown on the map. Newly constructed Ford Hall (F) also is present. Van Dyck Hall was constructed soon after this photograph. The Mall still had not been closed to automobiles. Ballantine Hall, New Jersey Hall and the old Art Building also are marked in green.

Detail of Voorhees Hall and surrounding buildings on a charming, interactive 1910 map of New Brunswick by Hughes and Bailey at the Library of Congress web site (map 599). The individual buildings are viewable at the extreme zoom but are distorted and out of scale.
